  Michigan Select Camp Process

USA Hockey hosts over 1,400 hockey players at nine player development camps around the country every summer. The weeklong sessions provide many of the United States’ finest young hockey players with concentrated on- and off-ice training and instruction, as well as the chance to compete against other top players from their age group.

Each of the Boys’ Player Development Camps will each feature 12 teams of 20 players from across the country. In addition to daily instruction and practices, teams will compete in five games. The Girls’ Select 14, Select 15 and Select 16 Player Development Camps will showcase six teams of 17 players, while eight teams consisting of 17 players will compete at the Girls’ Select 17/18 Player Development Camp. Finally, the Sled Hockey Player Development Camp will offer instruction to more than 30 disabled athletes.
To qualify to attend these Development Camps Michigan Select camps are held as a qualifier for the State Select festivals held later in the spring and summer from which the final selections are made to go to the national camps. Depending on the birth year players will be selected to a list as qualifiers for the state festival camps.  This doe not mean that a player that makes the qualifier list automatically moves on the state camp.  In the second and third level age camps fewer players are invited to compete at the state camps because individuals who attended the national camps are invited back to the state camps.  In a sense they are given a reprieve of not having to attend the qualifier camp.   This then narrows the number of spots available for the state camp.  The entry level group will have more players invited to the state camp only because all the players must come through the qualifier.  There are no players who are given a bye.  There are 3 qualifier camps in the state.  Districts 2-4, 5-6 and 7-8.  The state festival is then filled will players from these 3 district as well as those players who were invited back.

Typically there are approximately 20 forwards, 10 defensemen and 3 goalies at best that are invited to the state camps.  Some years more players are invited to attend the state camps and some years less.  These selections are based on how the players are ranked.  More players are selected onto the qualifier lists because some players invited to the state camps elect not to come and players in the lower rankings are then invited to fill in the vacancies.

 Team Michigan

Every spring 20 of Michigan’s top high school hockey seniors represent Michigan at the National High School Showcase. The Chicago Showcase is sponsored by USA Hockey and gives elite high school players an opportunity to be scouted by junior and college programs. MAHA supports and sponsors Team Michigan. Each year tryouts are held in the spring to select the top 20 prospects form those in attendance. Those selected go to the Showcase and play other teams selected from other USA Hockey Affiliates. For more information visit the team Michigan website at http://www.team-michigan.net/
